I am interested in subjects that are complicated, nuanced, unfamiliar while at the same time commonplace. Subjects that require more investigation to understand our shared humanity. I care that my work doesn’t neatly answer all the questions, but instead leaves room for the audience to answer them. I care about my audience having a shared experience with my work and my performers. I try to leave room for an audience member to have a variety of possibilities for interaction with the work.
To get there, I have to start by exploring the inner impulse to create. I ask “Why is this interesting? Why do I care? Am I alone is this?” If I can answer these questions, I bring them to the dancers and we talk about it.
